Brain Health Breakthrough puts people who are ‘Experts with Lived Experience’ at the heart of service design. We are leaders in peer-led support and have navigated through the pandemic, being up and running with all our services online, providing support for several groups since April 2020, and trail-blazing a long-COVID peer support group in July 2020.
In response to many enquiries from other organisations about our expert by experience with running long covid peer support groups we put together training that we delivered to Blackburn with Darwen Council, who are now running a long-COVID peer support group and recently featured on Look North West News.
We have put together this delivery as a simple framework to pass on my experience, using a peer support model, to others. I have developed this to support individuals using my combined knowledge as someone who has experienced long-COVID, plus 30 years’ experience training in various therapies and coaching, adult education, and health and social care.
Teaching Methods
This training will be delivered using teaching methods of experiential learning, modelling to others, and learning from each other, using question and answer sessions and bespoke presentations.
Delivery
I have broken this down into three sessions that can be run over three weeks or fast-tracked into one week. The sessions will be delivered for 1 hour and 15 minutes each within Microsoft Teams. You may find you need further training, which can be delivered if required.
Week 1: Introduction to long-COVID.
Week 2: Effectively running a peer support group.
Karen Haworth is qualified in adult education and has combined her experience from three comprehensive therapy trainings, to create a unique effective style and Brain Health Breakthrough's coaching services. We ran specialised wellbeing and
self-care programmes, for 31 unpaid carers. Feedback from staff included:
“The programme was appropriate
to the very diverse needs of our
groups including older people,
Asian carers and single parents.
Their approach has been authentic
and really makes people feel at
ease.
I’d rather work with someone who

has real understanding, empathy
and insight.”

our communities need at this
difficult time.”
Blackburn with Darwen Council:
We ran a long-COVID peer-support group ‘Train the Trainer’ course. Feedback from management included:
"I think it might be useful for us to provide feedback on how the sessions go in BWD, which would provide you with examples of how Train the Trainer supports organisations to set up their own"
Feedback from participants:
"The course has really helped raise my awareness of the impact of long covid on individuals and also the challenges they face, the help that is needed & how to effectively provide support."
